After taking a typography studio in the fall (2007), I became interested in combining my experience in creating form with my appreciation of type. I started with some drawn studies:
I applied for and received a Small Undergraduate Research Grand from the Carnegie Mellon Undergraduate Research Office to pay for materials to continue studying. Inspired by some (very gentle) rummaging trough CMU's rare book room, I produced two sets of characters highlighting two notable points in Typographic history:
A set of laser-cut acrylic Univers paying homage to Akzidenz Grotesque and the rise of Modernism:
and a set of ebony blackletter based on Guttenberg's movable type:
I also made a small box for the blackletter out of walnut, maple, and ABS. The lid functions as a platform to play with physical compositions of letterforms.
